Girl Guides Victoria is delighted to announce the appointment of Sue Smethurst to the position of CEO of Girl Guides Victoria.
Sue Smethurst is a highly respected journalist, businesswoman and company director. She is currently employed as a Senior Journalist with The Australian Women’s Weekly. In addition, she is the Chair of regional tourism board Destination Gippsland and serves on the Board of The Australian Advertising Standards Bureau. She recently completed a three-year term as a Non-Executive Director of the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital and similar tenure as Chair and Coordinator of the iconic fundraiser Open Houses.
She has strong corporate, political and community networks and a proven track record in communications, marketing, public relations, fund raising, project management and governance. She was awarded an AICD Board Scholarship in 2014.
Throughout her career, Sue has achieved success across a diverse range of fields from media to the retail and NFP sectors.
Sue’s career began as a cadet at New Idea magazine, working her way through the ranks to become Editor of the iconic magazine at 26; the youngest woman ever to edit a weekly women’s magazine in Australia. She has spent more than 20 years in media working across television, radio and magazines, writing for Australia’s biggest selling titles including New Idea, Woman’s Day, The Australian Women’s Weekly, Good Weekend and the Herald Sun.
