Ask a Volunteer: What’s it like being a District Manager?

As the District Manager, Emily provides support for Unit Leaders in her local area.

District Managers enhance their leadership skills, their interpersonal skills, their problem-solving skills, and their communication skills. It’s a fantastic opportunity for anyone who is passionate about helping girls and women to build their skills and their connection to the community.

Emily tells it best. Read about her experiences below!

Emily is a District Manager with a great hat and a passion for empowering girls.

I decided to become a District Manager because I had children and weekly Unit meetings were hard to commit to ongoing when I’d had a hard week. I also loved working with my team as a Unit Leader and wanted to help us all achieve more. I started just helping on the side with the previous District Manager, and took on the role when she was ready to step back.

My work as a District Manager has given me greater confidence. I’ve grown my skills in delegation, prioritising tasks, leading adults, listening to others and knowing what needs to be actioned.

My main tasks as a District Manager are:

  • Supporting Leaders
  • Emailing parents and being their point of contact for questions
  • Promoting District engagement between Units and the wider community
  • Helping the Parent Support Group

I really enjoy networking with the greater Guiding community across Victoria. I also love being connected to the local grassroots Guiding and working with the girls. Empowering young women is super rewarding.

Being a District Manager is easier than it seems. There’s lots of support to get trained.

If someone was thinking of becoming a District Manager, I would tell them to just give it a crack and learn something new! District Managers play a pivotal role in supporting a group of amazing, empowered women. It’s well worth the reward.
