Lonsdale Ski Lodge

Girl Guides Victoria is now the proud owner of the Lonsdale Ski Lodge on Mt Baw Baw! We’re so excited about the amazing memories that Guides will make up there.

Hiring the lodge

Before the lodge is ready for bookings, we need to complete some maintenance activities.

Keep an eye out in Guiding News for updates – we’ll let you know when you can start booking your adventures. Next year, we are excited to get as many groups as possible on the mountain during all seasons!

We’re developing an information booklet, which will outline pricing, room layouts, transportation, activities, how to book, and some risk assessment considerations.

Some awesome activities that will be available:

  • Mountain biking
  • Alpine dingo educational encounters
  • Frisbee golf
  • In-ground trampolining
  • Skiing and snow-boarding lessons
  • Tobogganing
  • Flora guided tour walks
  • Mt Baw Baw alpine frog scavenger hunt

Where the lodge came from

In the late 1950s, a group of  Rovers (the 1st Dandenong Scout Group) dreamed of opening their own ski lodge on Mt Baw Baw.

In an attitude that will sound very familiar to Guides, the Rovers and their families decided to pitch in, raise the funds, and build the lodge themselves in the early 1960s.

It took twelve months.

‘We are looking forward to pleasant times when it is finally completed,’ observed the President of the Lonsdale Rovers Ski Club at the 1963 Annual General Meeting.

Their efforts were worth it – after its completion, the lodge saw plenty of ‘pleasant times’.

More recently, the lodge had become a legacy building. The Committee could not maintain it, but wanted it to remain a place where young people could have a great time in the great outdoors.

They decided to give the lodge to a like-minded organisation.

An extraordinary offer

In May 2018, Girl Guides Victoria was contacted by the Lonsdale Ski Club’s Committee.

The Committee wanted to know, ‘Would Girl Guides Victoria like to take over ownership of the Lonsdale Ski Lodge, free of charge?’

Our answer, of course, was ‘Yes! We’d like that very much!’

We will keep the Lonsdale Ski Lodge’s name and celebrate its history. We’re also excited to see Guiding stories unfold at the lodge.
