Janelle Howell, Next State Commissioner for Girl Guides Victoria.

Girl Guides Victoria is pleased to announce that Janelle Howell has been appointed as our next State Commissioner, commencing 1 February 2020. On Saturday, the State Council meeting overwhelmingly endorsed Janelle’s appointment to the role.

“The State Team and I congratulate Janelle on her appointment and we are confident Girl Guides is in good hands for the next three years,” said Lynne Emblin, State Commissioner.

As an eight-year-old, Janelle first stepped into Guides at the Creswick Guide Hall, and has strong memories of her time as a Woorail and camping at Lingbogol. More recently, Janelle has been a member of the GGV Executive, has supported Guiding in Australia as the Victorian appointed Director on the Girl Guides Australia Board and contributed to a range of other governance activities across finance, risk and insurance.

Janelle brings a wide range of professional experience gained in the corporate and not for profit sectors to the role, including being a qualified primary school teacher and librarian, and five years as a residential boarding house mistress. Janelle is also the Head of Governance – Insurance with NAB based in Melbourne.

Janelle has a long legacy of volunteering including several Board positions, skilled volunteering and leadership with various charities including the Edmund Rice Camps which provides camping experiences for children and families experiencing disadvantage.

Janelle brings a strong understanding and appreciation for the work of the current State Team, and seeks to use her term as State Commissioner to amplify the Voice of the Girl through support of Leaders, enhancing our leadership culture and experience.

“I am excited about becoming the twentieth Victorian State Commissioner and following in the path of incredible women and State Teams who have done and achieved great things – it is a privilege.

I’m looking forward to meeting many of you and learning about what you think we can do to continue delivering great Guiding experiences for girls and young women across Victoria.

Over the coming months, as I learn more about the finer details of Guiding in Victoria, I will seek to collaborate with the State and Management Teams, the talented District Managers and Unit Leaders as well as the Trefoil Guild and other amazing volunteers who make Guiding possible. I especially look forward to learning all I can from the current State Commissioner – Mrs Lynne Emblin OAM who is an inspirational Guide Leader.”
