Boer War Service 2020

This event has been cancelled for 2020 by the Boer War Association.

Girl Guides Victoria are once again invited to attend the Boer War Day Service at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.

The Boer War Day Service commemorates the 23,000 Australians that served. This year it pays particular tribute to the Australians and New Zealanders who fought together in the ANZAC tradition. Miss Vanessa O’Neil, Consulate General of New Zealand, will deliver the commemoration address. The Association is keen to encourage young people to participate in the short march and service at the Eternal Flame.

When: 12.00 pm Sunday 31 May
Where: Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne
Who: Interested Guide Units, accompanied by their Leaders

The march will commence at the lower end of the Shrine Forecourt at 12.00 pm. Please arrive early to register. The march will be led by the Creswick Light Horse, followed by the Tobruk Pipes and Drums, the Australian Great War Association in Boer War uniforms, Banners, and Flags.

A certificate will be awarded to every Guide who attends in uniform. A special framed certificate will be awarded to Units with 6+ girls or Leaders in attendance. Guides must attend with a supervising adult. You will be required to give all names and group contact details to an official at the registration tent at the lower end of the Shrine Forecourt before the march. The Right Honorable Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell and Honourable Wendy Baden-Powell will also be attending.

In the past Scouts and Guides have helped with minor jobs on the day, and their assistance may be required this year. Family medals can be worn. Light refreshments will be provided after the service.
