State Commissioner Message: May – June 2022

May – June 2022

Hello Girl Guides and our Guiding Community,

Well, we did it … State Gathering was such a highlight in the school holidays with so many Girl Guides travelling to Britannia Park from across the whole state to join in on an awesome collection of activities. There were Girl Guides flying high on the possum flyer, digging deep navigating through some of the tight spots with the Girl Guide caving team and singing (and dancing) as loud as can be. New friendships were formed and the collection of guiding memories and moments that shape Girl Guides was everything that State Gathering was about. I hope you’ve all heard about some of individual experiences and Girl Guides are looking forward to the next gathering … there’s so much on offer. State Gathering was made possible through some superhuman volunteering efforts and while it was sleep that many needed following a fun packed series of days a might BIG THANK YOU from everyone at Girl Guides Victoria is also needed. With our dedicated volunteers much is possible and I’m personally very grateful for all that everyone gave before, during and after to make State Gathering the fantastic event that it was for our Girl Guides.

Thank you also to all the Girl Guides who supported the various ANZAC day parades, I have received many messages of appreciation from across the state for the service and support that our Guiding community has provided.

A small note to our parents and guardians that if you love sailing … never done sailing but are interested in helping bring in, on and around water activities to girls and young women at the Guide Scout Water Activities Centre in Sandringham? We are keen to hear from anyone wanting to give any time / contribution / experience across a range of areas including sailing; water event coordination; speed boat driving; stand up paddle board; life saving and water safety; sea kayaking; on / off water communications; equipment maintenance; building maintenance; committee member; sailing club management … and much more. Even if you don’t yet know how to drive a speed boat but would like to learn and volunteer your time then please get in touch. We recently held a meeting at the Water Activities Centre for interested volunteers.  If you missed it, we will be holding an open day sausage sizzle lunch on Saturday 25 June from 10:30am. If you are interested in attending, please let us know by emailing the team. You can also complete the Water Activities Centre Volunteer Expression of Interest form here.

In May, we celebrated National Volunteer Week, a special time when Girl Guides Victoria reflects on the Inspiring Women and volunteers who make Guiding happen. The achievements that are made possible, the lives that they impact and the memories they create … it is simply awesome and we are grateful for each volunteer for all that they are and all that they give. Thank you to our many Girl Guides, volunteers, helpers, supporters and families who bring Guiding experiences to life, and who support the impact of Guiding in a variety of different ways. Thank YOU, BRAVO and very well done!

Yours in Guiding,

Janelle | Wirrigirri
