From a chance encounter to a key leadership role, Karen Trepte is now making a uniquely meaningful impact in Guiding as Girl Guides Victoria’s Barwon South West Region Manager.
“When I spoke with Michèle Stokes (GGV Governance Chair) at a trade show, I said I wanted to get back into Guiding, but probably not as a Leader,” Karen shares. “She mentioned there are other ways to contribute, and the rest is history!”
As Region Manager, Karen supports the Leaders who create incredible experiences for girls in her Region. “It’s a great way to give back without running a Guide Unit. I get to use my work skills to benefit Guiding, and still see the girls when I attend Unit meetings or camps.”
Thanks to technology and a strong support system, Karen balances her role with a full-time career effectively.
“I do emails on the train into work or on my Surface Pro on weekends, and have a great mentor who helps me navigate the Region Manager Learning Passport, which is better than some of the induction training I’ve had [in my career] – it really gets you across all areas of your role.”
Karen believes the Region Manager role is perfect for anyone passionate about supporting others. “It’s no longer reserved for those with decades of experience,” she says. “Organisational skills, people skills, identifying what people need and helping them find the right information – that’s all it takes. A willingness to help others be their best is all you need – the rest can be learnt.”
